Validate cluster module message lengths before allocation - #5269
Prevent 32-bit length overflow when constructing Valkey cluster module messages.
Problem
createModuleMsgBlock() calculates the serialized message length using uint32_t, while createClusterMsgSendBlock() adds the allocation prefix using the same width.
For sufficiently large module payload lengths, the allocation-size calculation can wrap, causing the allocated buffer to be smaller than the space required for the message.
The related Pub/Sub length-validation issue was addressed in #5030. This PR applies corresponding validation to the cluster module-message path.
Changes
Add clusterModuleMessageLengthValid() to validate the payload against the complete cluster send-block allocation size.
Use the normal cluster-message header as a conservative upper bound, protecting both normal and lightweight message formats.
Reject oversized payloads before allocating, copying, or broadcasting messages.
Propagate rejection through the existing module API error path without changing the public API signature.
Document the additional error condition.
Add boundary regression tests and a module API integration test verifying safe rejection without sending a message.
Testing
Build Valkey successfully.
Run ./runtest --single unit/moduleapi/cluster.
[] Run ClusterModuleTest.* GoogleTest cases in CI.
Confirm existing cluster-module message tests continue to pass.
The oversized-payload regression uses a synthetic length and a small buffer. It does not allocate a multi-gigabyte payload.
Local validation
./runtest --single unit/moduleapi/cluster — 50 passed, 0 failed. Memory-leak check passed. The GoogleTest arithmetic boundary cases and broader regression suite remain pending CI validation.
Scope
This is a narrowly scoped correctness fix. It does not change the cluster wire protocol, modify normal message serialization, or introduce a new public API.
The issue was discussed privately with the Valkey security maintainers, who confirmed that the affected module API operates within Valkey's trusted-module boundary and recommended a public bug-fix PR against unstable.

Walkthrough
The cluster module send path now rejects payloads that exceed the cluster bus message-length limit. Unit and module API tests cover the size boundary and verify that rejected sends do not increase the sent-message count.

Summary
Length validation and send guard src/cluster.h, src/cluster_legacy.c, src/module.c
A new helper checks whether a payload fits the 32-bit message-length limit after accounting for message overhead. The send path returns C_ERR for oversized payloads. The API documentation lists oversized payloads as an error condition.
Unit tests cover accepted and rejected payload lengths. The module API test checks rejection, confirms that no message was counted as sent, and verifies that the node still responds to PING.

Return bool from clusterModuleMessageLengthValid().
The new helper returns a true/false value but is declared and defined as int. As per coding guidelines, src/**/*.{c,h,cpp,hpp} requires: "Use the boolean type for true/false values." The int return type is kept only for older functions, so the new helper should use bool. Changing the type does not change the returned values, and the existing callers and unit tests still work.
Based on the coding guidelines quoted above, this is a convention change for new code.

Update the declaration and definition of clusterModuleMessageLengthValid to
return bool instead of int, keeping its existing true/false behavior and
ensuring both signatures remain consistent.

Add an integration check for a length just above the payload limit.
test_send_oversized_msg passes only UINT32_MAX. A send-path guard that rejects only that value passes this test. Add a call with a length just above the limit, such as maxModulePayloadLen() + 1, so the module API test covers the first invalid length.

Update test_send_oversized_msg to also call ValkeyModule_SendClusterMessage with
a payload length one greater than maxModulePayloadLen() and assert it returns
VALKEYMODULE_ERR. Preserve the existing UINT32_MAX check so the test covers both
the first invalid length and the extreme value.

Ready for human review.
No open findings. The new commit d891d52 only adds a gtest that calls clusterSendModuleMessageToTarget(NULL, ...) with oversized lengths. With a NULL target it reaches the length check at src/cluster_legacy.c:5767 and returns C_ERR without touching the payload. DCO passes.
Risk: Low. The change is one early return on the module cluster-message send path. It only fires for lengths within about 2.3 KB of UINT32_MAX, so normal module traffic is unaffected.
Open findings: none.
Backport: Needed for 9.2, 9.1, 9.0, 8.1, 8.0, 7.2. Every maintained line has the unchecked msglen += sizeof(clusterMsgModule) - 3 + len (cluster_legacy.c on 8.0 to 9.2, cluster.c on 7.2). The sibling pubsub length check is already on all of them.
